MSeveral federal states want to severely restrict public life in view of the high number of coronavirus infections. You are anticipating a possible agreement between the country leaders and Chancellor Angela Merkel. In these federal-state talks, too, an agreement on tough cuts is emerging.
Baden-Württemberg is planning a night curfew and daytime exit restrictions at the beginning of next week, as reported by the German Press Agency, citing a conversation between the green-black state government and the municipal umbrella organizations. Anyone who leaves the house during the day should only do so with a valid reason, such as for work. The cabinet plans to adopt the new requirements in a special session this Friday and announce them at a press conference at 12 noon. As the start date for the measures in the country, next Tuesday was last discussed, it said.
Shop closings in Thuringia
In view of the increasing number of corona infections, Thuringia is planning shop closings and distance learning from first class. As of December 19, a number of shops will close, as the State Chancellery announced on Friday morning. Grocery stores and shops for basic needs could therefore be excluded from this. The regulation applies subject to the decisions of the next Prime Minister’s Conference.
Distance teaching is to be introduced in schools for grades one to six. For the time being, this applies on December 21 and 22, 2020 and between January 4 and 10, 2021. School care should be offered for children in grades one to four if they cannot be looked after by their parents. The cabinet wants to discuss a possible nightly exit restriction on Tuesday. Then it should also be clear what the regulations for Christmas and the New Year will look like.
Berlin’s governing mayor Michael Müller assumes that the federal states will agree on a three-week lockdown with the federal government. It is becoming apparent, also in discussions with colleagues from the federal states, “that there will be significant cuts from the 20th” and the retail sector will be shut down significantly, said Müller on Thursday evening in the ZDF program “Markus Lanz”. The school holidays would have started anyway, many people no longer went to work and local transport would be quieter. “Between December 20 and January 10, we have practically three weeks of massive restrictions, which will certainly also lead to the incidence going down,” said the SPD politician, who is also chairman of the conference of prime ministers.
Müller expressed the expectation that the Prime Minister’s Conference would agree that public life will be largely shut down in these three weeks. That is also becoming apparent. Even those whose countries had low numbers of infections now said that one was in a nationwide crisis situation in which one had to show solidarity. The urgent appeals from Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) were very helpful here.
Lower Saxony’s head of government Stephan Weil (SPD) had previously made a similar statement in a ZDF “special”: “I assume that between December 19 and January 10 we will generally have a very, very quiet phase in Germany . And that has to be the case, ”said Weil.
Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier warned in the ZDF program “Maybrit Illner”: “The exponential growth is starting again. And that means: we have to act urgently ”. The CDU politician added: “We have to act more than was previously planned”. At the same time, Altmaier said with a view to the infection numbers, what he had heard in the evening, “nothing good can be expected” for the reports on Friday morning. On Thursday morning, the Robert Koch Institute reported the highest value within 24 hours with 23,679 corona infections.
