Fernandinho has joined Athletico Paranaense on a free transfer on a two-and-a-half year contract. The traditional club announced this on Monday. His working paper at Manchester City ends on June 30 after nine years.
Fernandinho (37) has come full circle. He was once trained at Athletico Paranaense, until 2005 he played two years for the first team before moving to Shakhtar Donetsk for almost eight million euros. In 2013, the 40 million euro transfer to Manchester City followed.
At the Sky Blues, the South American was a top performer and leading player under both Manuel Pellegrini and his successor Pep Guardiola. He completed 383 games for the reigning Premier League title holder.
Last season, the veteran under Guardiola commuted between the starting eleven and the substitute bench. Nevertheless, the successful City coach will miss Fernandinho. Until recently, the Catalan tried to persuade the 37-year-old captain to extend his contract. Unsuccessful.
