Two-time Olympic hockey champion and State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov commented on the idea of banning athletes from becoming deputies. His words are quoted by the radio station, Moscow Talking.
“How does an athlete differ from another citizen of our country?” He is elected, he has the opportunity to defend his position in the State Duma. Who can forbid him, especially the law? This is some kind of nonsense. There are various deputies who are active, useful, there are inactive and useless. Everything depends on their citizenship, ”Fetisov said.
The deputy noted that he himself was elected and competed with people of different professions and different ages. "I won. What does this have to do with the use of doping? This is generally a silly story, ”he added.
Earlier on November 5, four-time Olympic champion in biathlon Alexander Tikhonov expressed the opinion that athletes should not become deputies after the end of their careers. “Go about your business! There is no need to sit there, ”he said.
Among the Olympic champions working in the State Duma are Vladislav Tretyak, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Irina Rodnina, Alexander Karelin, Svetlana Zhurova and Svetlana Khorkina.
