Formula 1 will race in Vietnam for the first time in the 2020 season. A corresponding multi-year contract confirmed the World Federation Fia on Wednesday. The first race on the 5.56 km track in Hanoi will take place in April 2020.
The course in the capital of Vietnam is thus the first new route in the calendar, since Liberty Media took over the helm of the premier class in January 2017. "Together with the city, we have developed a course that is not only a real test for the drivers, but will also give the fans the best racing pleasure," said F1 boss Chase Carey.
What does this course look like?
In general, the developers of the track are based on many different courses around the world. On the Formula 1 website, the Fia speaks of inspiration through the tracks in Silverstone, Istanbul or the Nürburgring.
Overall, the track will have 22 turns of varying degrees. This should give it many opportunities for overtaking maneuvers. The longest straight is 1.5km long and also includes the spot where riders can reach the highest possible speed at the GP of Vietnam – 335km / h.
"We are thrilled to be here in Hanoi, one of the most exciting cities in the world"

Formula 1 fans have already been busy discussing the new course. The many straight cuts were not well received by all. They saw too few opportunities to overtake. Others were happy about the possibilities to reach top speeds. How the class will look in practice and whether the fans will change their minds will be on display from April 2020.
