First connection with quantum technology is over 20 km

Have you ever heard of quantum technology? One of the main goals of this technology, which has been the subject of research in recent years, is the creation of the quantum Internet. In practice, with quantum technology it is possible to have a ultra-secure communications line.

In Portugal, a section of 20 km optical fiber, with quantum technology, between a data center in Lisbon and another in Almada.

Quantum technology ensures ultra-safe connections

It has more than 20 kilometers, connecting Gare do Oriente in Lisbon to Pragal in Almada, crossing the 25 de Abril bridge. Behind this milestone is a consortium led by Warpcom and ID Quantique, in conjunction with Deloitte, Fortinet and IP Telecom.

Bruno Gonçalves, Business Unit Manager – Cybersecurity at Warpcom says that...

By current standards, information will be easily decrypted using quantum technology, which is a serious risk and threat to Governments, organizations and individuals.

This connection proves that quantum technology is already a reality and that it is possible to guarantee the security of communications between two points with quantum-safe technology, creating a level of security such that, even if in the future there is an attack using quantum technology, the security of the information is not compromised

Portugal: First connection with quantum technology is over 20 km

The first connection of this type is a historic landmark in Portugal, which also includes Fortinet security solutions already recognized in the market.

One of the main objectives of this technology, which has been the subject of research in recent years, is the creation of the quantum Internet, with a strong investment announced by the governments of the main world powers and the European Union for its financing (Quantum Communications Infrastructure). In the future, the goal is to guarantee safer connections and more points with this type of technology, creating a network on a global scale.
