Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie and more star in the Texas creative’s comedy. In “Asteroid City” it goes haywire in a desert town.
Asteroid City is set in a fictional American desert town circa 1955. The schedule of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (intended to bring together students and parents from across the country for a camaraderie and scientific competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.
After the rather meager box office result of The French Dispatch ($46 million worldwide) hopes Wes Anderson will Asteroid City back to successes like The Grand Budapest Hotel or Moonrise Kingdom to be able to connect. It somehow doesn’t seem to matter how well his films perform in the box office; the stars continue to line up to be in an Anderson film. So are in Asteroid City including Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, Hong Chau, Bryan Cranston, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, Hope Davis, Steve Carell, Maya Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Goldblum, Rupert Friend, Sophia Lillis, Liev Schreiber, Matt Dillon, Rita Wilson and Jeffrey Wright. On the other hand, who is missing is Bill Murray, who has been since Rushmore starred in every Anderson film in 1998. The main role in Rushmore Incidentally, played Jason Schwartzman, who, after many supporting roles, is allowed to take on the leading role in a Wes Anderson film again.
Asteroid City will be released in cinemas in German-speaking Switzerland on June 15, 2023. With a release date like this, it’s very likely that the film will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where Anderson already has Moonrise Kingdom and The French Dispatch showed. Confirmation from the film festival on the Croisette should flutter in in the next few weeks.
