Casillas ended his journey as a professional goalkeeper after an eleven year career in the world of football.

The giants of the Spanish League, Real Madrid, are the team who have felt Casillas’ shrewdness in goal the longest.

He has appeared with Real Madrid’s main squad since 1999 and decided to leave in 2015 to one of the participating clubs in the Portuguese League, FC Porto.

With FC Porto, Casillas faced serious obstacles. He had a heart attack in May 2019 and has never returned to grazing after that.

Casillas’ last match with FC Porto was recorded on May 26, 2019, when he visited the Rio Ave FC headquarters.

After experiencing a heart attack, news of retirement was always attached to the end of Casillas’s career.

The goalkeeper, who is currently 39 years old, had expressed his desire to return to play because he didn’t want to be hit by the difficult situation he had experienced.

However, conditions made Casillas unable to realize this intention. He chose to retire saying that football had become his goal and dream.

“The most important thing is the path you take and the people who accompany you, not where you are going,” wrote Casillas on his personal Twitter account.

“With a combination of work and effort, that goal will present itself, and I can say without a doubt, that it has become a dream and a goal.”

Casillas’ decision then invited a response from his former competitor, Gianluigi Buffon.
