Football – Freiburg im Breisgau – Freiburg before a hot finale of a “top season” – Sport

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – Just a few weeks ago, SC Freiburg was praised for its stable defense. After the 30th matchday, the Breisgauer had conceded the third fewest goals of all Bundesliga teams with 34. The defense around the German national players Nico Schlotterbeck and Christian Günter as well as the Austrian national player Philipp Lienhart was considered to be one of the safest together with the Dutch national goalkeeper Mark Flekken. But after conceding ten goals against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3:3), the win in Hoffenheim (4:3) and the home defeat against Union Berlin (1:4), this impression has changed.

The defensive behavior against Berlin was “unacceptable”, said Streich immediately after the game. Well, before the last Bundesliga game of the season on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) at Bayer Leverkusen, third in the table and safe Champions League participant, Streich had his professionals practice in training to better control the opponent again. It was about the timing when starting up, about paying attention to the distances or to the remaining defense when in possession of the ball.

Because Streich wants to prevent his team from receiving another blow in the neck in Leverkusen and then going to the DFB Cup final on May 21st against RB Leipzig with a negative experience. “It’s also about you going into another highlight a week later in Berlin with a positive feeling and positive energy.”

But the question before the trip to the Rhineland is also: In which European Cup will the sports club play in the coming season? After the high defeat against Union, Freiburg only qualifies for the Champions League if it wins against Bayer and fourth-placed RB Leipzig loses to Arminia Bielefeld, who is almost certain to be relegated. Participation in the Europa League, on the other hand, is almost perfect. Freiburg would only miss it if 1. FC Köln won at VfB Stuttgart in a SC defeat and at the same time caught up nine goals in goal difference. In addition, Union would probably have to win against VfL Bochum. Only then would the perspective of the Freiburg “Conference League” read.

It’s unlikely that Cologne will catch up, but other things happened on the last day of the game that nobody thought possible. “We can win an awful lot and lose an awful lot,” said Streich about the Leverkusen game. There and in the cup final it’s about “a lot. More is not possible.” He and his players also wanted to “show that we deserve to be where we are now”. Either way, it’s a “top season”.

Streich was to be noted that the probably missed chance of the Champions League rankles him. Nevertheless, he does not want to change Freiburg’s style of play. “We try to play football and also play football with risk.” Even if he has criticized the defensive and expects more from it than against Union: Nothing should change in the fundamentally offensive orientation.

In Leverkusen, his team, which, apart from the ailing offensive player Kevin Schade, is in full force, should “go into the game with their heads held high and with faith in themselves,” said Streich. Because a good result would also be better mentally for the preparation for the cup. As the 56-year-old said: “Losing finals sucks, winning finals is great.”
