Since the brand’s inception, Xbox has had a lot of trouble conquering Japan; however, throughout history it has had small victories. This week we witnessed one of them and that is that Xbox managed to outsell PlayStation for the first time in 8 years.

What happens is that, According to figures revealed by Famitsu, the Xbox Series S sold 6,120 units over the past week in Japan. In that same period, the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition sold a total of 2,693 units. For its part, the PlayStation 4, Sony’s last generation hardware, shipped only 22 consoles.

It is worth mentioning that the week before this, the PlayStation 5 sold 49,798 units in Japan, while the Xbox Series S shipped 10,610 units. With this we can see that, as in the rest of the world, Japan has console supply problems that generate huge differences in sales from one week to the next. We have another example in the Xbox Series X, which sold 3,508 units 2 weeks ago and last week only shipped 105 consoles.

A small victory for Xbox

Japan has been a very difficult territory for Xbox

The latter should not take the achievement away from Xbox. Although it is clear that the console market is currently dominated by Nintendo Switch and it seems difficult for Xbox and PlayStation to overcome the hybrid, it is an important moment for the brand.

We say this because less than 10 times in its history, Xbox has managed to overtake PlayStation in the weekly Japanese sales records. The last time that happened was 8 years ago when the Xbox One debuted in Japan and sold over 23,000 units in one week.

As we mentioned before, Japan has been a very difficult territory for Xbox. According to February figures, the brand has only sold about 2.3 million consoles during its 20-year history in the Japanese market.

Its most successful console to date is the Xbox 360, which shipped 1,616,128 units in this region. As a point of comparison, the PlayStation 5 has already sold 1,620,838 in its first year and a half on the market.
