Former Spokesman for India’s ruling party who insulted Prophet Muhammad is now missing

NEW DELHI – India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suspended spokeswoman Nupur Sharma on June 5, 2022 for statements deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.

A number of countries around the world have since condemned his comments, which have also sparked strong protests from India’s Muslim community in several states.

According to media reports on Friday (17/6/2022), Nupur Sharma has disappeared, citing a source in the Maharashtra state government.

Sharma has been summoned by Mumbai Police to appear on June 25 to face charges of hurting religious feelings, promoting hostility and causing public harm in connection with his questioning comments about the Prophet Muhammad.

Authorities have reportedly been searching for him for the past four days without success.

Sharma previously reported that he and his family received death threats for his statements.
