The French sports minister believes the IOC’s recommendation to allow Russians and Belarusians as neutral athletes is not binding for next year’s Olympics in Paris.
Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra told the press in Paris on Thursday that the recommendations were “a step that does not advance what we want to do for Paris 2024”.
– If the international federations decide that there will be participation with individual athletes, it will be under a strict neutrality regime, without the Russian flag or national anthem, she added.
The IOC has also received criticism from several countries, especially in the West, after the committee came up with recommendations and guidelines for how special confederations and sports organizers can incorporate Russians and Belarusians into sports again.
The IOC has not yet decided whether Russians and Belarusians will take part in the Olympics in 2024.
– The IOC has the last word. It is the IOC that determines the conditions under which athletes participate, said Oudéa-Castéra.
– At the same time, it is clear that the host nation’s head of state (French President Emmanuel Macron) will have a voice that will be heard in the IOC’s assessments, the sports minister added.
