France World | The flu epidemic continues to progress

The influenza epidemic continues in France and is reflected in a sharp increase in the number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations. Among the more than 12,000 patients who presented to the emergency for the flu last week, more than 1,800 were hospitalized, an increase of 70% over the previous week, according to figures from Public Health France.

During the period from Wednesday 6 to Tuesday, February 12, 2019, the Irsan, the Research Institute for the valuation of health data, estimated that influenza has affected 484,776 new people in metropolitan France. This is equivalent to an increase of 0.12% over the previous week.

"This represents a weekly incidence of 731 cases per 100 000. The value of the incidence for this week is strong," says Irsan.

The incidence rate remains strong

Among the regions most affected are Bourgogne Franche-Comté with 902 cases per 100 000 inhabitants and the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region with 834 cases.

Update on the epidemic in the regions

Since the outbreak began to spread 1,800 deaths can be attributed to the flu. Last year 13,000 people died because of the virus.

Increase in vaccination

Vaccination is recommended for people over 65, pregnant women and people with obesity. A first estimate as of November 30, 2018 shows a slight increase in vaccine coverage compared to similar estimates made on November 30, 2017. Coverage in metropolitan France went from 41.3% to 42.9% (+ 1.6%) for all people at risk.

The increase is 1.7% among those aged 65 and over (45.3% to 47.0%) and 0.9% (24.9% to 25.8%) among people at risk under 65 years old. This slight increase is observed in all regions of metropolitan France with a gain ranging from 0.7% (Normandy) to 3% (Brittany) among all people at risk.
