Freiburg celebrates choral music over a weekend – SWR Aktuell

After a two-year Corona break, the choirs are back. A varied festival weekend is planned in Freiburg from July 8th to 10th. It starts on Friday evening with the choir night.

More than 2,200 singers from 63 choirs are taking part in the big weekend “Choirward – Freiburg sings” from July 8th to 10th. This is announced by the organizers Chorstadt Freiburg and the Chorverband Breisgau (CVB). It should be a musical weekend for all small and large singing fans.

July 8: Choir Night

July 9th: Day of Children, Youth and School Choirs

9./10. Juli: “The Veil of the Temple”

July 10: “Freiburg sings – without borders”

The Freiburg Choir Night is taking place for the fifth time this year. Various choirs sing for 20 minutes each on four squares in the city center and change location again and again. The night traditionally ends with a closing song: At midnight, all participating choirs and spectators join in “The moon has risen”, this time on the square of the Old Synagogue.

It continues on Saturday: Again there are four places, this time children’s and youth choirs are performing there. In addition, a discussion round will deal with the question of how the pandemic is affecting the scene and how choirs can find new blood again.

A monumental work will be performed in the night from Saturday to Sunday in the Martinskirche on the Rathausplatz: “The Veil of the Temple” by John Tavener. Ten Freiburg choirs are involved.

Bernhard Schmidt, board member of Chorstadt Freiburg and choir director himself, said in an SWR interview about the piece:

The concept of the concerts on four squares in the city center runs through: On Sunday, among others, the “German-French Choir”, the “International Choir Freiburg” and the “Japanese Women’s Choir” will be there. Another round of talks will deal with the unifying power of choral singing. A “musical meditation” with Jewish, Arabic and Gregorian chants is also planned. At the end of the weekend, the Jazzchor Freiburg will give an a cappella concert at 7 p.m. on the Rathausplatz.
