Freiburg: Technologiestiftung BioMed Freiburg and University of Freiburg award prizes for schoolchildren – the award documents the special importance of promoting young talent in the biotechnological field

The award has been donated by the BioMed Freiburg Technology Foundation together with the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg since 2006 to honor and promote talented and scientifically interested students. It documents the special importance of promoting young talent in the biotechnological field. The prize honors outstanding achievements in the subject of biotechnology at the Biotechnological Gymnasium at the Merian School in Freiburg and is endowed with a total of 1,000 euros.

Rahel Bechtold receives the sponsorship award for outstanding achievements in the field of biotechnology. Rahel Bechtold graduated from the Merian School with 840 out of 900 possible points and an average grade of 1.0 in the 2020 Abitur class. She has consistently achieved excellent results in the field of biotechnology. Her interests relate primarily to environmental and nature conservation, which is why Rahel Bechtold has been studying environmental sciences with a minor in nature conservation and landscape conservation at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg since the 2020 winter semester. Rahel Bechtold is also involved in various nature conservation organizations such as NABU.

Merlin Ritter received the sponsorship award for outstanding achievements in the field of biotechnology. In the high school year 2021, Merlin Ritter completed the best high school diploma at the Merian School with 872 out of 900 possible points and an average grade of 1.0. He has consistently achieved excellent results in the field of biotechnology. Merlin Ritter shows a very broad and diverse social commitment and is very broadly involved in climate and environmental protection. In October 2021, Merlin Ritter will start studying biochemistry / molecular biology at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.

This can already be seen in the consistent choice of their subjects. I am very pleased that both are committed to environmental protection, ”said Vice Rector for Research and Innovation Stefan Rensing.

The biotechnological grammar school is a future-oriented educational offer at the Merian School, which provides in-depth knowledge of microbiological and chemical processes in the profile subject and allows insights into modern laboratory technology. “Our students carry out many practical experiments in our modern laboratory rooms and are thus gradually introduced to a scientific way of working, an optimal preparation for a later study in the natural sciences”, says the headmaster of the Freiburg Merian School, Markus Henkes.

With the establishment of the “Biotechnological Gymnasium” in the 2001/2002 school year, the state of Baden-Württemberg was the first federal state to consistently take into account the increasing importance of biotechnology in a grammar school education. In Baden-Württemberg there are currently biotechnological high schools at 28 locations, only one of which is in Freiburg. More are located in the BioValley in Waldshut-Tiengen, Lörrach and Offenburg.

The city of Freiburg, the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, the IHK Südlicher Oberrhein, the Association of Industrial Companies Baden (WVIB), the Freiburg Chamber of Crafts and Sparkasse Freiburg Nördlicher Breisgau are all involved in the BioMed Freiburg technology foundation. The foundation itself is administered by the Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe GmbH & Co. KG (FWTM). This ensures that the activities of the city’s innovation and technology promotion are closely interlinked with the work of the foundation and the center it supports. An important task of the foundation is the management of the BioTechPark Freiburg.
