From the In memoriam of the Oscar

The delivery of the Oscar not only consecrated Nomadland as the movie of the year, winning three of the most important categories; He also reminded us, in his In rememberence, how much notable talent lost the art of cinema during 2020. For example, actors all of them, Ian Holm –Bilbo, in the saga The Lord of the rings– with a track record of more than 130 acting credits; Max Von Sydow -almost 170 acting credits- stellar in films of the stature of The seventh seal Y The Exorcist; Olivia de Havilland, legendary actress, eternally remembered as the Melanie Hamilton from gone With the Wind; Christopher Plummer, the Austrian patriot Captain Von Trapp from The rebellious novice; Michel Piccoli (240 acting credits!), Actor of almost all the famous directors of his time: Buñuel, Hitchcock, Ferreri, Louis Malle, among others; Sean Connery – eternal darling of the people – the original James Bond, who was also Daniel Dravot on The man who would be King Y William of Baskerville on The name of the rose; Chadwick Boseman, not only Black Panther in a good number of films in the Marvel Universe, but equally interpreters of iconic characters of color, such as activist lawyer Thurgood Marshall in Marshall, baseball player Jackie Robinson in 42 and musician / singer “superstar” James Brown at James Brown: rey del Soul. Chadwick was only 43 at the time of death.

But we not only lost actors in 2020. We also lost important directors, such as South Korean Kim Ki-duk and British Alan Parker. Kim Ki-duk and his films were recognized around the world, significantly at Festivals such as those in Berlin, Cannes, Karlovy Vary, Moscow and San Sebastián. Some of his main films: The island (2000), Spring, summer, autumn, winter … and spring (2003), The spirit of passion (3-iron; 2004), Time (2006) and Piety (2012). For his part, Alan Parker will be remembered as a two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker, for Midnight express (1978) and by Mississippi on fire (1988). Another of his films, wings of Liberty (Birdy; 1984) won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. They are added to the list of his most remembered tapes Fame (1980), Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982), Avoid (1996) and Angela’s ashes (1999).

Likewise, we lost a cinematographer –Giuseppe Rotunno– and the composers Ennio Morricone and Johnny Mandel, genuinely relevant. Giuseppe Rotunno photographed films by Vittorio De Sica, Fellini and Luchino Visconti, among other famous directors. To him we owe the images of tapes such as Rocco and his brothers, The Gatopardo, Yesterday Today and Tomorrow, Roma, Amarcord, Fellini’s Casanova, Orchestral rehearsal Y The show must go on. Regarding the composers, Ennio Morricone, creator of more than 500 scores for film and TV, is immediately identified as the author of the music of the good, the bad and the ugly, Paradise cinema, Once upon a Time in America, The Untouchables Y The mission. In 2007 he received an honorary Oscar for the wealth and relevance of his career, while in 2015 he collected the statuette for The eight most hated. Finally, Johnny Mandel will always be remembered as the author not only of the music of MASH, but also of “Suicide is painless”, the song that became a genuine seal and icon of the film. In addition, in 1966 Mandel won the Oscar for best song for “The shadow of your smile”, the romantic theme of Souls in conflict (The sandpiper). And believe me, Johnny Mandel’s induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010, when he was 85 years old, was a joy. To all those mentioned, thank you so much and rest in peace.

(To conclude this column: if they go to the living room to see An unexpected miraclestay in your seat: the ending credits song –Waiting for my real life to begin– it is very cute and fantastic as a closure. They are warned).
