The first train on the new Tallinn–Tartu–Riga line departed from Balti Jaam in Tallinn, Estonia, on Monday at 2:50 p.m., with arrival at Riga Central Station scheduled for 8:46 p.m. Initially, only international tickets are being sold for the route.
Tallinn–Tartu–Riga Train Line Launched
The train departs daily from Tallinn’s Balti Jaam station at 2:50 p.m. and from Tartu at 5:05 p.m. The journey from Tartu to Riga takes 3 hours and 41 minutes, while the trip from Tallinn to Riga takes 5 hours and 56 minutes.
The return train departs from Riga at 7:38 a.m., arriving in Tartu at 11:25 a.m. and Tallinn at 1:57 p.m. The first departure from Riga was scheduled for Tuesday morning, January 13, at 7:38 a.m.
Tickets from Tartu to Riga cost between €19 and €22, and from Tallinn to Riga between €29 and €32. Tickets for journeys inside Latvia, between Valmiera and Riga, will be available in the coming weeks, according to Elron.
Running one train per day on the Tallinn to Riga route requires approximately €1 million in state subsidies annually, according to financial estimates.
The launch of the Tallinn–Tartu–Riga train line is a cooperative effort between the Estonian Ministry of Climate, the Estonian Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture, the City of Tartu, Latvian passenger train operator Vivi, and other Latvian partners.
