  • How does Switzerland cope with the corona pandemic? A reporter from the “FAZ” visited our country to find out.

  • Now he writes about the “return of smiles to Lake Zurich” and the Swiss feeling of freedom.

  • “That’s why they sit outside on the terraces and drink wine,” says the article.

“The return of the smile to Lake Zurich” – this is the title of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (FAZ) for an article on the corona situation in Switzerland. After months of strict Corona measures, the outdoor catering is now open again – “and immediately the country is changing for the better”.

The “FAZ” thus follows an article in “Bild”, which in mid-April had the following headline about Switzerland: “Feels like a corona paradise”. The author also reported on the local corona situation at the time. He raved about “happy people with the courage to live” and wrote about wine, chips and soap bubbles.

“Zurich smiles, Zurich laughs”

In Switzerland, the “FAZ” found “a good mood on earth, joie de vivre, everyday enjoyment” and “the great happiness of little freedom”, as the article says. “We went to the Limmat and saw the unbelievable: Zurich smiles, Zurich laughs.” Germany, on the other hand, is probably the worst-tempered country in the world, writes Jakob Strobel y Serra, who is the deputy head of the feature pages of the “FAZ”.

The whole of Zurich was apparently just waiting for the outdoor dining areas to open. The terraces of the restaurants, bars and cafes are full. According to the author, the Swiss are now sitting everywhere outside, on every free corner, in the tiniest of places – “regardless of whether it is sunny or shady, improvised or permanently installed” – and always at a distance, but never with a mask. Even on the street, hardly anyone wears a face mask. And already at lunchtime, wine is drunk and raclette and hash browns are eaten. All age groups are to be found, all kitchens, and all people are constantly smiling.

“You won’t let yourself be locked up”

“It is a strangely depressing, exhilarating feeling because these people show us what a strange world we are living in in Germany and what a much nicer world we could live in,” the author continues. Although the pandemic numbers in Switzerland are neither better nor worse than in Germany, there is “no paranoia” and “no panic” in Switzerland. In addition, no passer-by in Switzerland would jump aside in a frightened manner if an unmasked person came towards him. But there is also “no apocalyptic plague mood”. And you don’t enjoy the “hangman’s meal before the end of the world” – but a glass of Chasselas at Bellevue. Because you know that the world will not end.

The Swiss have neither “lost their common sense”, nor did they act crazy, naive, careless or thoughtless. “You just won’t let yourself be locked up.” For the people in Switzerland, freedom is a higher good than absolutist health protection. They preferred to control the state than let it control them. And they could weigh up between realistic danger and imagined threat. “That’s why they sit outside on the terraces and drink wine.”
