K Öln (dpa) – Seven weeks before his departure for the International Space Station, astronaut Alexander Gerst informs about work program and objectives of the mission «Horizons». The 41-year-old geophysicist is to carry out numerous experiments during his six-month stay on the ISS and is the first German to take command for several months on board. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the aim of the experiments is to gain insights for humans from a medical point of view and to advance the exploration of outer space. “Astro-Alex” will take off on June 6th together with the Russian Sergey Prokopyev and the US astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor from the Russian spaceport Baikonur in Kazakhstan. He was already on the ISS in 2014. The Baden-Württemberg is now in the final spurt of his preparations and training for “Horizons”. The press conference in Cologne today is expected to be his last appearance before the media, before he flies into space.
