Gladbach: Clear statement from Lainer – I’d rather go to the World Cup than Ronaldo! – Bundesliga

Very important games with the national team are coming up for two Gladbach stars this week.

Games that will decide whether you can still travel to Qatar for the World Cup in November.

► Left-back Ramy Bensebaini (26) has to beat Cameroon in two duels with Algeria in the knockout stages of World Cup qualifying. Bensebaini & Co. don’t play in Cameroon until Friday (6 p.m.) and the second leg in Algeria is next Tuesday (9.30 p.m.).

► Stefan Lainer (29) is already fighting for the World Cup qualification with Austria on Thursday (8:45 p.m.) in the playoff semifinals in Wales. The final against the winners from Scotland against Ukraine (postponed due to the war in Ukraine) would not follow until June.

Lainer on BILD: “We were very lucky with the draw, it could have been much worse. But Wales, Scotland and Ukraine are also difficult opponents. We will of course do everything we can to make our World Cup dream come true – a tournament like this is something very special.”

The fact is that other countries were indeed hit harder at the draw. Portugal with world star Cristiano Ronaldo (37) only has to go to Turkey in the semifinals. In the final it would then go against the winner from North Macedonia against Italy.

When asked by BILD whether Ronaldo or he was going to the World Cup, the Austrian responded with a declaration of war: “Stefan Lainer! Portugal wasn’t so lucky in the draw, first with Turkey and then probably with European champions Italy…”
