Grabbelkisten: The sad secret of the sorted out books

II am an anonymous philologist. I cannot walk past a book crate without checking whether there is a volume with a story that is not told by the official author of the work, but rather on paper, typography, the place and year of printing, bookplates, library stamps and of course, of what anyone wrote in their hand. Regardless of whether it is the grave stands in front of the antiquarian bookstores or these typical Berlin “to give away” boxes, in which books lie alongside discarded clothes and an Ikea cup from the nineties that has faded in the dishwasher: when the last bestseller was taken and the last romper has found a suitable child, there is still a single sock and the "field selection" of Friedrich Hölderlin's works, printed 100,000 times on bad paper in 1943 "on behalf of the Hölderlin Society and the main cultural office of the NSDAP".
