Guatemala, July 20, 2021. In the framework of the celebration of 60 years of bilateral relations between Guatemala and Canada and the 45 years of the signing of the Cooperation Agreement between both countries, the Guatemalan Foreign Minister, Ambassador Pedro Brolo Vila, held a virtual meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Marc Garneau, with whom he discussed bilateral and regional agenda issues of common interest between both nations.

Both foreign ministers recognized the potential for development and cooperation between Guatemala and Canada and ratified their firm commitment to continue working together to advance in aspects of special relevance such as the promotion of new commercial opportunities and market access, attraction of Canadian investment to the country. , strengthening cooperation, increasing the number of Guatemalan temporary workers who receive permits to work in Canada and expanding these opportunities to other productive sectors in order to promote regular, orderly and safe migration.

They also highlighted the importance of joining forces to jointly face the impact and challenges posed by climate change, particularly in relation to forest fires that negatively affect the two countries.

In addition, they exchanged experiences regarding the challenges of containment and on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, expressing votes that countries will soon be free of this health crisis, reaffirming that it is essential to join forces to counteract the devastating effects that they cause in the world.

Canada is a friendly country that has shown its solidarity and support, particularly in emergency situations, and the meeting was conducive to Ambassador Pedro Brolo expressing his gratitude to the Canadian People and Government for their unconditional support in dealing with forest fires, given the damage caused by storms Eta and Iota, during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as by the wide portfolio of cooperation projects for the country.
