In 2023, the long wait will finally be over. The live-action film of ‘The Little Mermaid’ will then appear in our cinemas. About three years ago it became known that singer Halle Bailey would take on the role of Ariel. She is known for the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, which she forms with her sister Chloe. As with the other Disney remakes, there will be a lot of music involved. Both original songs and new ones. Lin-Manuel Miranda (known for ‘Hamilton’ and ‘Tick Tick Boom’, among others) worked with Alan Menken on the film score and already gave a sneak peek in the ‘Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast’ in February. He confirmed that three or four original tunes were written and “no songs the fans like have been replaced”.
Actress Melissa McCarthy takes on the role of the evil sea witch, Ursula. An interview with ‘Watch What Happens Live’ asked about the remake and what fans can expect from the film. “I can be killed for anything I say,” he joked. She shared her reaction when she heard Bailey’s version of one of Ariel’s songs. “It was really overwhelming. She really sings straight from her heart and that comes in.” She added: “When I heard her sing the song, the seven of us were in tears.” Melissa McCarthy also described Halle as a remarkable young woman, who is very likeable both on set and off. By the way, she’s not the only cast member to praise Bailey for her singing talent. In 2021, actor Javier Bardem (53), who takes on the role of Ariel’s father King Triton, told ‘Variety’ that her voice is “out of this world”.

McCarthy is a big fan of the Disney story and talked about her time as a nanny on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’. For three years she watched the Disney movie almost every night. “I was terrified to sing. But I got such good guidance that I could flip the switch and realize that I’m playing a character, so I don’t have to be the best singer.”
Fans are now very curious about the remake and about the singing qualities of the cast members. We are still waiting for the official release date of ‘The Little Mermaid’.
