Hamburg Triathlon: German mixed relay third – Great Britain WINS

As of: 07/10/2022 5:24 p.m

The German mixed relay was unable to repeat last year’s triumph at the Hamburg Triathlon. Laura Lindemann and Co. came third on Sunday. The quartet from Great Britain secured the victory.

Thousands of spectators lined the route in downtown Hamburg and saw a gripping relay race over the Olympic distance (1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running), in which the German team received a 20-second time penalty and so had no chance had the win.

“It was annoying about the penalties, but we made it to the podium.”
— Laura Lindemann

Final runner Lindemann (Potsdam) fled to the front with the burden of the time penalty and delivered a strong race. But the two-time European champion had to serve the penalty just before the finish line and watched as Great Britain ran to victory in 1:20.50 hours ahead of Australia (1:21.03). Germany secured third place on the podium in 1:21.10 hours.

German team collects two time penalties

The German starting runner Valentin Wernz (Tuttlingen) had handed over to Lisa Tertsch (Darmstadt) in sixth position – twelve seconds behind the leading relay team from New Zealand. Hayden Wilde, winner of the sprint race on Saturday, had presented a hell of a pace. Tertsch repeated her strong performance from yesterday when she finished third in the elite race and fought her way up to second, but picked up the German team’s first time penalty in the water.

Wernz: “Have to be satisfied with third place”

In the second ten seconds, Lasse Nygaard Priester (Saarbrücken) switched from cycling to running due to a faulty substitution. He sent Lindemann out on the track in fourth, who still got the best out of it. “Apart from the mistakes, we had a really good race. Given the circumstances, we have to be satisfied with third place,” said Wernz.

Thousands of spectators cheer on amateurs and professionals

Over the various distances, around 9,000 athletes took part in the amateur competitions in the Hanseatic city at the weekend. Without corona restrictions, thousands of spectators cheered on amateurs and professionals on Saturday and Sunday.

In 2023 it’s about the mixed world title again

With the swimming course in the Binnenalster, the cycling and running course, which largely leads through the city, and the finish on the Rathausmarkt, the Hamburg Triathlon offers athletes and spectators a special ambience. “There is no event that stages the city center as a sports arena in a comparable way,” said Hamburg’s Interior and Sports Senator Andy Grote.

This should certainly apply to the coming year, when the world title in the mixed relay competition will be awarded again from July 13th to 16th in the Elbe metropolis. It is not only awarded the title in the elite, but also in the juniors and in the age group.
