The World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships will take place in Hamburg in 2023. This was announced by World Triathlon, the German Triathlon Union (DTU) and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in a joint press conference in the Hanseatic city. There was also a positive outlook on this year’s triathlon events, which were postponed to late summer and early autumn.
The 2023 World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships will award medals in nine competitions. In addition to the elite individual and mixed relay races, the juniors and age group athletes will also compete for World Championship medals in individual and relay races. While the juniors and age group athletes compete individually over the sprint distance (750 meters swimming, 20 kilometers cycling, 5 kilometers running), the new eliminator format is used in the elite: here the athletes have to go through the super -Spring distance (300m swimming, 7km cycling, 1.7km running) through heats and semi-finals to qualify for the finals. An exact date for the World Triathlon World Championships has not yet been set.
World Triathlon President Marisol Casado, who came especially for the press conference, sees Hamburg as an absolute showcase event: ““ The experience that Hamburg has in organizing major sporting events is unique. Hamburg has always been one of the very special cities in our series. The audience, the city, everything in Hamburg is just great. The athletes love it, the fans love it and the city has always given us a very warm welcome. And of course the mixed relay has a very special connection with Hamburg. Some of the most successful events in World Triathlon history have taken place here and we couldn’t be happier to return here. ”
DTU President Martin Engelhardt was also pleased: “I am very proud that we have managed to bring the World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships 2023 to Hamburg in a joint application with the City of Hamburg. Above all, this is an award for Active City Hamburg, which has proven year after year in the past that it is an excellent and reliable host. In particular, the Hamburg spectators, who are known worldwide as sports enthusiasts, create an impressive atmosphere every year that drives the athletes to top performance. For our German athletes – in the elite and in the age groups – it will be something very special to go hunting for medals in front of a home crowd in 2023. ”
New structure: DTU becomes World Triathlon contract partner – Ironman Germany GmbH takes over the implementation
What is new, however, is the constellation of rights. As of this year, DTU will be the contractual partner of World Triathlon and the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg and will thus be the organizer of the World Triathlon Championships Series race in Hamburg. “Two years ago at the World Association we made the strategic decision that we would work more closely with the local national associations in important races that we host and that we would like to make them responsible for ensuring the standards of World Triathlon,” explains Casado and adds: “The aim is also to strengthen the national associations and thus strengthen the structures of World Triathlon as a whole.”
DTU President Engelhardt adds: “World Triathlon approached us with the request that DTU get more involved on site. After a few internal consultations, it became clear relatively quickly that we wanted to comply with this request. When it comes to running the races, we continue to trust Oliver Schiek and his team here in Hamburg. The people involved have stood for the success and high quality of the competitions for many years. ”
The city of Hamburg is also fully behind the race, represented at the press conference by Hamburg’s Senator for Interior and Sport Andy Grote: “Over the past 20 years, the Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon has developed into a lighthouse event with international appeal. With the elite races held under corona conditions last year, which received worldwide attention, we made it clear how important the triathlon is for Hamburg. We are sticking to that and will go one better with the 2023 World Cup. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the best athletes from all over the world, young and old, to the big showdown in the Active City. ”
Current: Ironman Hamburg and Hamburg Wasser Triathlon probably only with minor corona restrictions
As things stand, things look good for the Ironman Hamburg scheduled for August 29, 2021 and the Hamburg Water Triathlon (September 17/18, 2021) planned for the third weekend in September. As Oliver Schiek explained, the main thing now is the implementation after the cancellation in 2020. For the Hamburg Wasser Triathlon, the registration portal will also be opened again from next week, as not all participants registered in the previous year want to compete in September.
The hygiene concepts for the field of participants are in place and have been approved, only when it comes to the admission of spectators there is still no final decision, as the corona situation is currently still very dynamic. As Senator Grote explained, the main problem is that there are no fixed spectator seats at the triathlon on the route. Here they want to take restrictive measures for the “route hotspots”, where many spectators are expected to gather. From today’s perspective, there should be no restrictions for spectators and fans on the other, less frequented sections of the route, as it is easy to maintain distances there.
