With France, a candidate for the title has already dropped out at the European Handball Championship, the next one has now followed: The Danish handball team has already decided before the last game in the preliminary round. After Hungary's 24:18 (9:12) victory against Iceland, Denmark can no longer pass Hungary and Iceland with a success in the evening game against Russia.
Denmark had previously lost their opening game against Iceland (30:31) and had failed to go beyond 24:24 against Hungary in the second game. The Danish team is the current Olympic champion and won the World Cup for the first time last year, becoming European champion in 2012 and 2008. With star players Mikkel Hansen and goalkeeper Niklas Landin, Denmark was also the top favorite in this final round.
The Hungarians – who would have needed at least one point to advance – won thanks to an enormous increase in performance in the second round and move into the main round with two points. Iceland is also in the main round, but without points. Norway, Portugal, Slovenia and Sweden complete the group.
The Hungarian match winner was goalkeeper Roland Mikler, who was outstanding in the second half. Bence Banhidi also scored eight goals for the World Championship tithing.
Until the break it looked good for Iceland under the eyes of the Danish players. But after the change, the team around the ex-Kiel Aron Pálmarsson made too many mistakes – the loud support of the Danish fans in the arena in Malmö did not help.
