Harvard University study determines how good milk consumption is

Throughout history, one of the most important drinks, both for the development of children, and essential in millions of recipes, is milk. However, in recent years, hundreds of people, some due to poor tolerance and others for environmental reasons, have restricted milk consumption to plant-based substances or eliminated them from their lives altogether.

One of the main questions about the consumption of this drink is how necessary it is for adults or the elderly; doubt that a study from Harvard University in the United States resolved some time ago.

The article called ‘Milk and Health’, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in a 2020 edition, explains how it can be beneficial for an adult to frequently include milk in their diet, and ensures that for a person looking for a healthy eating routine it is not necessary, and even if it is consumed in excess it can become harmful.

As emphasized in the study, the reasons why it is not necessary for an adult or adolescent to consume three daily servings of dairy products were argued, stating that although, the calcium and nutrients that milk has make children’s bones grow, this does not have the same effect on adults.

The researchers apparently found that in those countries where adults frequently consumed milk, they were also more likely to suffer hip fractures, as well as to develop prostate or endometrial cancer, depending on the case.

“Total dairy consumption has not been clearly associated with weight control or risks of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. High consumption of dairy products is likely to increase the risks of prostate cancer and possibly endometrial cancer, but reduces the risk of colorectal cancer”, explained the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Given this, and adding the properties of dairy products, such as the saturated fat in milk or the high level of sugar in some vegetable substitutes, the scientists stated that it was better to opt for other types of foods that provide the necessary calcium, without the need that they are dairy, such as vegetables, orange juice, or tofu, among others.

“Cow’s milk includes a complex combination of macronutrients, micronutrients, and growth-promoting factors that can contribute to nutrition.; however, all these nutrients can be obtained from other sources”, assured the scientists, emphasizing that the consumption of milk is not so beneficial for adults.

And they recommended: “For calcium, kale, broccoli, tofu, nuts, beans, and fortified orange juice; for vitamin D, supplements can provide an adequate intake at a much lower cost than fortified milk.”

In his study, he even talked about the damage to the environment that the massive and frequent consumption of dairy products can represent. “The effects of dairy production, particularly industrial-scale production, on greenhouse gas production and climate change, water use and pollution, and antibiotic resistance are great, potentially 5 to 10 times higher per unit of protein than the food production effects of soybeans, other legumes, and most grains”, warned the scientists.
