“Havana Syndrome”. The US investigates new cases among diplomats

In a press conference, Price referred to the New Yorker weekend reports that, since Joe Biden came to power, about 20 American diplomats in Vienna had experienced mysterious symptoms indicative of brain damage: migraines, dizziness, nausea, a sudden sense of pressure and other neurological conditions.

“In consultation with our partners from other agencies, we are vigorously investigating reports of possible unexplained health incidents among the US Embassy’s Vienna community,” Price said.

Similar incidents, first recorded by US diplomats in Havana in 2016, have come to be known as the “Havana syndrome”. Although more than 130 diplomats in China, Russia and the United States alone have complained about them since then, the cause of the complaints remains unclear. Vienna is the place where the second highest number of cases was recorded.

According to the New Yorker, CIA chief William Burns believes diplomats are the target of attacks. One of the most common hypotheses is that microwave radiation may be the reason, but this has not been proven.

In June, the Biden administration set up two new panels of experts to investigate cases of the syndrome and develop measures to protect diplomats.
