Nutritionists have developed a new method to measure food portions – with hands, thumbs and fists instead of a scale.

The new Guide to the British Nutrition Foundation was created after global portion sizes and what is available in UK supermarkets was investigated.

Better portion control is thought to help make people healthier and put the NHS under pressure. It could also save customers money and it would be better for the environment as less food would be wasted.

The health reporter at the BBC, Laura Foster, explains some of the key actions that people often take.
