Everyone knows that losing weight after 40 years of age is more difficult than in 20 years. Few people can clearly answer why so, the maximum shrug: "age." But doctors have a different opinion: not just age, but disorders that program the body to accumulate fat. And the thing is – in hormones, which, without exaggeration, make losing weight impracticable.
The biologist-geneticist Irina Maltseva understood the situation. In her opinion, the main obstacle to weight loss, except, of course, improper nutrition, is hormonal disruptions. And the most common – a violation of the thyroid gland, which is responsible for the metabolism in the human body.
What is wrong with the thyroid gland, that it "rebels" against weight loss?
A condition that directly affects the weight for which the thyroid is responsible is hypothyroidism, or lack of thyroid hormones.
What is hypothyroidism? This is, first of all, a decrease in the production of thyroid-stimulating hormone – TSH and thyroxine – T4. The lack of these hormones significantly slows down the metabolism, since the process of metabolism in the cells is directly dependent on them. Most often, hypothyroidism affects just people over 40 years old, although not necessarily. It develops as a result of autoimmune diseases, for example, thyroiditis, radiation exposure, and iodine deficiency in the body. It is characterized by depressive states, rapid weight gain, swelling, fatigue.
As you already understood, a sharp decrease in metabolism, in which hypothyroidism is guilty, adds difficulties in losing weight. Actually, it is impossible to lose weight under such circumstances. But letting everything take its course is also impossible.
What to do?
- Confirm the diagnosis. Be sure to visit the endocrinologist. After tests for hormones, ultrasound, and other diagnostic measures, the doctor will select the correction of this condition with drugs or operable – if hypothyroidism is caused by abnormalities in the development of the thyroid gland.
- Attention to iodine. This chemical element is essential for proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Doctors advise to use iodine with iodized salt, only salt with potassium iodide is preferable, since it has a longer shelf life.
- Instead of diets. Nutritionists with problems with the thyroid gland are advised not to sit on hard diets. So you can completely slow down the metabolism and worsen your condition, disrupting the production of hormones even more. The source recommends simply reducing the daily diet by 300-500 calories, this will allow you to lose weight without consequences.
