Former national coach Guus Hiddink returns to the Australia national team bench for one game. The 75-year-old Dutchman will act as assistant to boss Graham Arnold in Thursday’s World Cup friendly against New Zealand in Brisbane.
“Arnie called me. It wasn’t a question. He said: I want you to come,” reported Hiddink. “I didn’t hesitate for a second and said: I’m coming.” In 2006, Hiddink was team manager for the Australians during the World Cup finals in Germany, Arnold was his assistant at the time. Four years earlier, Hiddink had surprisingly led the then co-hosts South Korea to the World Cup semi-finals.
