Warning: more Xarelto counterfeits surfaced
Just a few days ago, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) had pointed out that the original manufacturer Bayer had falsified the medicinal product Xarelto. Now more fake batches of the anticoagulant have surfaced.
More fake batches discovered
At the beginning of June, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) drew attention to counterfeiting of the drug Xarelto® 20 mg (active ingredient rivaroxaban) of the original manufacturer Bayer AG in Polish-Slovak packaging, which was discovered in the United Kingdom by a parallel distributor. Now two more fake batches of the anticoagulant have surfaced.
This is how you recognize the fakes
The BfArM points to its website on two other confirmed, fake batches of the drug Xarelto® 20 mg of the original manufacturer Bayer AG in Polish-Slovak packaging, which were discovered in the United Kingdom at a parallel distributor.
According to the information, the two other counterfeit batches are also in Polish-Slovakian style and bear the real existing batch names BXHUBD2 and BXHXL41 and the expiration date 09/2020.
The experts explain how the counterfeits can be recognized:
With the original product, the perforation lines are clearly visible, but the two perforation lines are not recognizable in the counterfeit batches BXHVHC3 and BXHXL41. And with the counterfeit batch BXHUBD2, the perforation line is weak.
In addition, all three counterfeit batches BXHVHC3, BXHXL41 and BXHUBD2 are recognizable by the following feature:
- On the tops of the blisters are printed on the counterfeit batches, the Bayer logos and always recognizable from all angles.
- When the original product, the Bayer logo is embossed and only weakly recognizable in the stray light (oblique).
Investigations not yet completed
The BfArM points out to parallel distributors, wholesalers, pharmacists and users to check the drugs listed above and to report any suspected cases to the BfArM.
According to the information, the investigations in this case are still ongoing. The origin of the counterfeit is currently under investigation.
The BfArM is in close contact with the state authorities, which are responsible for the monitoring of drug traffic in Germany, and the European Medicines Agency EMA.
As soon as further information is available, the BfArM will inform immediately.
Medicines protect against the formation of blood clots
The medicine Xarelto® is a so-called anticoagulant.
"Anticoagulant drugs help to keep certain components of the blood from adhering to each other so easily. They therefore protect against the formation of blood clots, "explains the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWIG) on the portal" gesundheitsinformation.de ".
Colloquially, they are often called "blood thinners". Since they do not make the blood more fluid, this designation is actually not quite correct, "say the experts.
Such medicines are used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease caused by blood clots. These include heart attacks, strokes and venous thrombosis, "explains IQWIG.
Taking the medicine may also be associated with undesirable side effects. The most common are bleeding, sometimes they go unnoticed.
In addition, according to experts, they can promote thrombosis in some patients. (Ad)
