Want to know what's new on social media and how this could affect your hotel or resort? This month we have changes from Instagram, Twitter and YouTube as well as some important issues on Facebook. Let's take a look at what this means for you.

Advertisers are constantly reporting issues with the Ad Manager of Facebook

There were still issues with the Facebook Ad Manager dating back to last November, when it came to a failure just days before Thanksgiving. Advertisers have continued to report platform performance issues, including major inconsistencies and outcomes, and issues with publishing or opting out of advertising campaigns.

What this means for Hotels & Resorts:

A large number of hotels and resorts are heavily dependent on Facebook ads for their advertising strategies. So these are not good news. Note: Not all advertisers are affected by these issues, but you should be aware of them if you choose.

The best thing you can do now is to keep a close eye on your campaigns. If you do not seem to be able to opt out of a campaign, drain your budget immediately after sending a Facebook help ticket and watch for unreliable campaign performance. Until the problems are solved, this is the best we can do to be proactive.

Horizontal video comes to IGTV

Landscape videos are now supported by the Instagram sister app IGTV. They are formatted much like a YouTube video that can take up a small portion of the screen when viewed vertically, but fills the entire screen when the phone turns horizontally.

What this means for Hotels & Resorts:

If you use IGTV and have videos that look better with a vertical layout, this is your chance. For hotels and resorts in particularly scenic areas, this option can help capture the beauty of the background and entice guests to stay with you.

Twitter releases live streaming with guests

Twitter has just introduced a new feature that allows mobile users to host a live broadcast and invite up to three guests. Guests only participate in the audio so they can be heard but not seen.

What this means for Hotels & Resorts:

Live video is a strong social strategy for hotels and resorts, and it's great news to find new ways to make it even more appealing to potential guests. Use this feature to give guests the ability to ask questions or ask influencers about their experiences.

YouTube announces pure image discovery ads

So far, YouTube Ads was a video-only platform, but that's about to change. YouTube has just announced new image-only discovery ads that will appear in the YouTube Home Feed and Discovery sections. Users can click directly on the website, shop, and more of an advertiser.

What this means for Hotels & Resorts:

Video ads have proven to be incredibly effective on YouTube, but not every hotel and resort wants to continuously invest large sums in creating new video campaigns for promotional purposes. This new option, which includes only images, makes it easier to view YouTube ads on the platform, so you can reach guests at a slightly lower cost in terms of time and money. Try these new ad placements and see if they work for you.

YouTube is changing the number of public subscribers

YouTube has announced an update that will affect how the number of subscribers is displayed on the channels they are viewing. For channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers, the exact number of subscribers is displayed, and for channels with more than 1,000 subscribers, the number of followers is rounded off. For example, an account with 5,005,000 followers would have an estimated number of 5,000,000.

The creators still have access to the exact numbers in their analysis that they find in their Creator Studio. This update is expected to be released in August 2019.

What this means for Hotels & Resorts:

Social proof is an important part of all social media marketing. Therefore, this update could have a minor impact on hotel and resort marketing on YouTube. If rounding does not work in your favor and reduces the number of subscribers slightly, it may affect users' perception of their videos. However, it is important that the content is correct. For the best results on the platform, create videos that your audience wants to see, and use keyword-rich titles and descriptions to increase their visibility.
