Apple iPhone comes with a Notes app built into the iOS operating system, which, as the name suggests, takes care of simple but important note-taking tasks.
Notes app on iPhone was not feature-rich and third-party apps were flooding the market. But then Apple started introducing more features, most of which were introduced with iOS 15, but more are coming with iOS 16.
One of the features introduced by the company is support for smart folders in the Notes app. It offers a different and easier way to find notes. Created smart folders can be filtered with several options.
In this step-by-step guide, we’ll show you how to create smart folders in the built-in Notes app on your Apple iPhone.

Step 1: Open the Notes app on your Apple iPhone.
2nd step: When the app opens, tap the “New Folder” button in the lower left corner.
Step 3: After that choose an account like Om My iPhone or iCloud.
If you select the iCloud option, the folder will be synced to iCloud and if you select On My iPhone, the folder will be restricted to your local device.
Step 4: Once done, tap on “New Smart Folder”, then enter a name for the folder. You can then select tags or create new tags.
That’s it. After following the step-by-step guide mentioned above, you have successfully created a new smart folder in the Notes app on your Apple iPhone. You can also create a smart folder from the tag browser by tapping on the tag, then selecting the More button, followed by Create Smart Folder, then naming and saving the folder.
The Smart Folder is accessible from the Folders section of the Notes app and it appears in the same list as the rest of the folders. To differentiate folder types, Smart Folders have a gear icon on the left.
