Bad data was expected and arrived. Last Thursday, Yolanda Díaz, Minister of Labor and Social Economy, announced the processing of 240,000 cases of temporary employment regulation (ERTE) by companies, a figure that affects approximately 620,000 workers. The coronavirus crisis is devouring jobs with each passing day, the economy is not relaunching, and the prospects are also not positive. The employers of temporary employment agencies and employment agencies, Asempleo, estimated on Monday that the Covid-19 will affect three million workers in Spain, and that unemployment will rise to 14.2% during the first quarter of the year.
Two months ago it was much easier to define a strategy. Now, of course, everything has become very difficult ”, admits Alfredo Vela, author of How to look for work in social networks and without them, who has spent the last years studying the behavior of the labor market. The first step, he explains, is to answer an apparently simple but essential question: “We must know what we want to work on. If we want to stay in our profession or if it is perhaps interesting to recycle ourselves ”.
Once the dilemma is solved, the real challenge begins: looking for a job. With companies closed and the inability to deliver the curriculum in person, social networks have become a fundamental tool for approaching jobs. More than 660 million users – of whom a quarter are looking for a job – from 220 different countries, 30 million registered companies, 20 million job offers and 40 million recruiter profiles contemplate, for example, Linkedin, a specialized social network in connecting professional profiles whose logarithm, experts explain, deeply believes in the theory of the six degrees, which says that it is possible to connect any person in the world with another without ever exceeding six degrees of kinship. In practice, this means that Linkedin rewards bold users with visibility, capable of establishing meaningful links.
Once the curriculum has been drafted and updated in detail and the photo – a smiling image, with formal clothes and on a white background – is ideal, you should jump in. “We must investigate which companies or recruiters are interesting to expand our network of contacts. Without harassing and always tending to locate those who select personnel ”, explains Antonio Vallejo Chanal, director of digital marketing and Linkedin expert.
Located an interesting receiver, he comments, the appropriate thing is to contact him with a concise, individualized and sincere message, without fear of acknowledging that he is unemployed. “Only two things can happen: they reject us, which only means that they are not looking for anyone in our profile at the moment, nothing more; or that they accept us, which means that they are open to hear more about us, ”Vallejo Chanal says. To finish convincing those responsible for human resources, few elements are more relevant on Linkedin than a blog. Like other social networks like Facebook, this reserve also has a space for each profile so that everyone can write what they consider.
As it is a network of professionals, experts recommend feeding it at least a couple of times a week with specialized content that is not very controversial. That is to say, no religion, politics or sport. Instead, well-stitched articles should appear that show employers a deep understanding of those sectors where we are willing to return to work in the near future. The key, experts agree, lies in not falling into despair. Looking for a job, and even more so at a time when the economy has stopped almost completely, can seem exhausting and useless because the results, in most cases, will take time.
Precisely for this, they reason, it is important open all possible doors. Beyond Linkedin, networks such as BeBee, which organizes its users by interests and has an important database that brings together offers from other portals, are gaining more and more weight. Even Twitter, through trends such as #empleo and #trabajo, or Facebook, where professional groups proliferate and it is possible to apply for job offers, are becoming powerful tools especially for those who have it most difficult: veterans near the retirement age and inexperienced youth. “We must lose the fear of offering our knowledge to companies, regardless of age. Can you show us? Well, even through this we will meet people and learn ”, summarizes Vallejo Chanal.
