Base stations need a power source and have antennas. For its part, Huawei has replaced diesel generators with solar panels, which offer a cleaner source of electrical energy, in Nigeria and Angola. At the same time, the company launched a green 5G antenna that covers an area of up to 500 meters using half of its transmission power. This reduces energy consumption by 30%.
Another speaker in Thursday’s session, Luis Neves, CEO of the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), stressed that digital must be at the heart of the climate conversation.

To this end, ITU-T members, including Huawei, have proposed a standard for measuring network power consumption. Known as the Network Carbon Intensity Energy Indicator (NCIe), this standard was approved by the ITU-T on October 19, as Recommendation ITU-T L.1333.
