Huawei Calls for Network Evolution for Green Development at COP27

Introduction of a Network Carbon Intensity Energy Indicator (NCIe) to assess the energy efficiency of the network.

[Sharm El-Sheikh, Égypte, 10 novembre 2022] A Huawei executive said Thursday that information and communications technology, or ICT, will digitize industry, spur innovation and make other industries green.

These remarks were made during a session organized by the Global Innovation Hub (UGIH) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on the occasion of the 27th Conference of the Parties, or COP27, which is currently being held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

Referring to the “facilitating effect”, Philippe Wang, Huawei’s executive vice president for the North Africa region, said that ICT is “making other industries greener”.

“5G, artificial intelligence, data analytics, cloud computing – all of these things will improve industrial processes in ways that reduce energy consumption, and decrease carbon emissions,” he said. declared.

According to Philippe Wang, in the same way that ICT allows street lights to turn off when there is no one around, 5G wireless base stations can automatically turn off when there is no traffic. data traffic, which saves energy.

Base stations need a power source and have antennas. For its part, Huawei has replaced diesel generators with solar panels, which offer a cleaner source of electrical energy, in Nigeria and Angola. At the same time, the company launched a green 5G antenna that covers an area of up to 500 meters using half of its transmission power. This reduces energy consumption by 30%.

Another speaker in Thursday’s session, Luis Neves, CEO of the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), stressed that digital must be at the heart of the climate conversation.

“If we combine the spirit of sustainability with digital, I believe we can create a powerful machine to drive the sustainability agenda forward and accelerate the journey to a world where 10 billion people can live healthy lives. . And companies should consider both their carbon footprint and their carbon handprint,” he said.

To this end, ITU-T members, including Huawei, have proposed a standard for measuring network power consumption. Known as the Network Carbon Intensity Energy Indicator (NCIe), this standard was approved by the ITU-T on October 19, as Recommendation ITU-T L.1333.

According to Nompilo Morafo, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer of MTN Group, “sustainable and measurable action” is the key to achieving net zero emissions targets. “In this approach, the use of digital technologies offers a particular potential to increase the production of green energy and the energy efficiency of all industries,” she added.

The UNFCCC IGUH session, titled ‘ICT for Green’, addressed the ways in which transformative ICT technologies could be used to enable the green development of a wide range of industries, making it easier to bring the world towards net zero emissions.
