From 1 April there will be a deposit on cans. For Dutch beer brewers, this means that their hundreds of millions of beer cans must have a special logo with a barcode. It is a bit of a struggle, but chairman Fred Teeven of Nederlandse Brouwers is confident that it will work.
“It is quite an operation,” Teeven says to NU.nl. In our country, billions of cans of drinks are sold every year. “For us, it concerns more than a billion cans of beer. Almost a third of all beer is sold in cans.” This happens in the supermarket and the catering industry, but also at festivals, for example.
After a long hesitation, the decision was made two years ago: a deposit was also required on cans to prevent litter. That was originally supposed to happen at the beginning of this year. But because the collection system would not be ready in time, it was postponed by a few months. The supermarkets were also opposed, because they did not want another waste stream.
All cans will have a logo with a barcode. Via the barcode you will then receive your 0.15 euro deposit back at the return systems.
‘Brewers get a lot poured on them’
“We have barely recovered from the corona crisis and are now busy with this,” says Teeven on behalf of the beer brewers. “After the deposit, the government wants to increase the consumption tax on non-alcoholic beer and adjust the excise system. We get a lot poured on us and we need a political breather,” said the former politician.
In terms of sales volume, the beer sector is almost back to pre-coronavirus levels, according to the figures for 2022. But according to Teeven, that is no reason for celebration. “We are in the middle of an energy, raw materials and labor market crisis. The resulting price increases will once again bring heavy weather for the sector.”
A total of 12.2 million hectoliters of beer was sold last year. More than 9.5 million hectoliters is still lager, but that segment is declining. Much more non-alcoholic and specialty beer is being drunk. “Very striking within specialty beer is the enormous increase in low-alcohol specialty beer.”
