Macron called on states that are members of the UN and take a neutral position to join the fight against Russian aggression.
“From this rostrum, I call on the UN to act so that Russia refuses to choose war, so that it realizes what price it will have to pay. And we will all have to pay,” the French president emphasized. “Those who are silent today become accomplices imperialism. […] Russia is trying to make sure that the idea of double standards is established. But the war in Ukraine should not be a conflict to which people remain indifferent. Yes, this conflict is close to Europe. Europe decided to support Ukraine without going to war with Russia. But we all feel the direct consequences of this war and must play a part in putting an end to it. Because we all have to pay the price.”
Russia deliberately violated the UN Charter when it invaded Ukraine on February 24, he stressed.
“Russian troops are stationed in Ukraine, and as far as I know, there are no Ukrainian troops in the Russian Federation. This is a fact. And we must face this fact. The longer the war goes on, the more threat it poses to peace in Europe and the world, it leads us to a broader permanent conflict, where the sovereignty and independence of each depends only on the balance of power, the size of the armies, on the alliances or intentions of armed groups and formations. Those who consider themselves strong seek to subdue by any means those who are considered weak “What is happening since February 24 is a return to the era of imperialism and colonies. France refuses to follow this path,” Macron added, stressing that France will tirelessly strive for peace.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an invasion of Ukraine under the guise of “demilitarization” and “denazification.” The invasion was preceded by attempts at telephone and face-to-face anti-crisis negotiations between a number of world leaders and the President of the Russian Federation.
