- Tiger Woods makes comeback on PGA Tour
- Tiger Woods says he’s “very rusty” but still wants the win
- Genesis Invitational on Sky Sport from Thursday
Golf fans here in Germany can also be happy because Tiger Woods will finally be teeing up again on the PGA Tour.
For example, from Thursday at the Genesis Invitational (Sky Sport will broadcast from Thursday, 3:30 p.m.), which his Tiger Woods Foundation is organizing. But the 15-time major champion isn’t just a tournament host. The 47-year-old announced at a press conference on Tuesday that he not only wants to give the “Greeting August” in the tournament, but, like in the past, will play to win.
Tiger Woods: The golf champion finds it difficult to walk, but he still dares to win
The signs and meaning of this comeback on the tour should be well known: Tiger Woods is still in rehab after a serious car accident in February 2021. He still finds it difficult to walk, which is why the old master is sparing with his tournament participation.
Weeks like this at the Genesis Invitational are therefore rare. For the last time in an official tournament, Woods teeed up at the British Open last June, but missed the cut there
At the pre-event press conference, he explained that he was “very rusty”. But to lower his goal for this week than victory because of that, that wouldn’t be the tiger.
Tiger Woods before PGA comeback: “I’m very rusty.”
“I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t think I could beat these guys and win the tournament. That’s my mentality,” Woods said at length at Tuesday’s press conference at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. “I’m very rusty but I’ve played from a ‘rusty situation’ many times and done well…plus I know this golf course.”
Woods knows Riviera well, although unlike almost every other tournament on the PGA Tour, he has yet to record a win here. In 13 previous appearances at the Genesis Invitational – or its predecessor tournaments at the same place – he was only able to finish second once, in 1999.
Battered Tiger Woods aims to win Genesis Invitational: ‘I’m there to get a win’
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation. So it’s understandable that Woods supports the event by attending. And of course he also has responsibilities as a host, tournament representative, but Woods explains that he can put those aside on the first tee. And possibly blow the attack on number 1 like in the old days.
The tiger can’t smile nicely and take part in the tournament because of the beautiful pictures. He says: “I can’t imagine that as a competitor. If I enter the tournament, I’ll try to beat everyone. I’m there to get a win, okay?!”
We are excited!
