The International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, Netherlands, has accused Russian President Putin of war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine during the more than year-long war. The International Criminal Court said in a statement that Putin was a war criminal for illegally transferring children from Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine to Russia.

Al Jazeera reported that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Maria Alekseevna Lvova-Belova, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in Russia’s Office of the President, on similar charges. Russia’s position is that it will not accept the action of the International Criminal Court.
Russia maintains that it has not committed any atrocities since it invaded Ukraine in February last year. The warrant issued against the Russian president came shortly after a UN-backed investigation accused Russia of widespread war crimes in Ukraine. DW News reported that the extradition of President Vladimir Putin will be a challenge because Russia does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Russia has denied allegations that it deliberately targeted civilians. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that Ukraine’s energy sector was targeted. Although Russia signed the ICC Statute in 2000, it has never ratified a treaty to become a member.
