    • Eugenio Cambaceres (Buenos Aires, 1843-Paris, 1888). From a wealthy family, he burst into public life in his country as a deputy and director of the newspaper ‘El Nacional’ in 1870. Abandoning both facets a decade later, he began his literary career with ‘Potpourri’ (‘Whistles of a bum’), in 1882, a volume influenced by romantic social satire that appeared without a signature and became both a scandal and a bestseller. Two years later a second part of the work was published, ‘Sentimental music’ (‘Whistles of a bum’), and the following year (1885) his most successful book, ‘Sindirection’, was published, which would mean his consecration as a novelist and, over time, would place him among the pioneers of the great Spanish-American modernist movement. His fourth and last novel, ‘En la sangre’, unanimously considered the most faithful to the principles of naturalism, was published in 1887.
