In the future, the transport drone can help to provide patients with blood preparations more quickly

Potsdam. If you need blood, you’re in a hurry! For example, after an accident or during serious operations, every minute can be vital and patients need blood supplies within a very short time. For this reason, the DRK blood donation service is currently developing drone logistics for the transport of blood, medicines and tissue together with the ADAC air rescue service. Well over 100 drone flights with the drone called MediCargo have already been carried out as part of the research project. These have shown that it can be used to transport blood to the patient five times faster than with the conventional courier service or taxi. MediCargo weighs around seven kilograms and can transport around 1.5 kilograms of blood as a payload on departure. The future aim of the project, which is currently being tested, is regular commercial operation for clinics throughout Germany.

Patient care with blood preparations in the state of Brandenburg in December 2022

Ensuring a safe and continuous supply of blood products for patients in the region, some of which can only be kept for a few days, is the central task of the North-East DRK blood donation service. Even around the Christmas holidays, blood products are available 24/7 for the requirements of the clinics. For this, the DRK is dependent on the support of many blood donors, who, for example, also take advantage of the opportunity to donate blood on December 26th, which is offered at selected dates in addition to the regular December dates.
