The Indian Defense Procurement Council approved the purchase from Russia of 21 MiG-29 fighters and the modernization of 59 such aircraft in the country’s air force.

This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to a statement by the Ministry of Defense of India.

“Given the long-felt need of the Air Force to increase fighter squadrons, the Defense Procurement Council approved a proposal to purchase 21 MiG-29s along with modernizing the existing 59 MiG-29s and purchasing 12 Su-30 MKIs,” the statement said.

In August 2019, Ilya Tarasenko, Director General of the MiG Russian Aircraft Corporation, announced that Moscow and New Delhi signed a memorandum on the maintenance of MiG aircraft in India.
