With consistent flu vaccine in Germany could prevent each year several thousand deaths. To do this, physicians would have to better communicate protection, according to the DGIM Congress.

MANNHEIM. in view of the worst flu epidemic During the last ten years, vaccination experts advocated better flu vaccine communication during the Internist Congress.
Doctors are crucial for the risk groups to be vaccinated. It is also unacceptable that, for example, only every third over 60-year-old is vaccinated against influenza.
With better vaccination rates, the epidemic could have been significantly alleviated, stressed the STIKO chairman Professor Thomas Mertens at a panel discussion organized by the “Ärzteblatt”.
Nationwide in the current season reported 1287 deaths in patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza
(see graphic below) are just the tip of the iceberg. “The true numbers are at least ten times higher,” said the virologist from Ulm.

Inoculation too rarely offered
Flu season 2017/18
» Highest sick leave the past ten years with 6.2 percent of employees in February.
» Records: 56,914 inpatients and 1,287 laboratory-confirmed influenza deaths were reported.
» Inaccurate picture: Most illnesses and deaths due to flu are not recorded. STIKO boss Professor Thomas Mertens assumes at least 12,000 deaths from influenza.

Many doctors would offer the vaccine too rarely. “Assuming 12,000 flu deaths last winter, even a vaccine with an efficacy of only 40 percent can still prevent 4800 deaths,” said Mertens at the event.
In order to improve the situation, better vaccination rates are needed and no discussion about alleged two-class medicine in the choice of a three or four-valent vaccine, said RKI President Professor Lothar H. Wieler at the event.
Influenza is underestimated and many people still consider it a kind of cold. It should therefore also be emphasized more strongly that pneumonia, sepsis or a heart attack could be the result of severe influenza.
Dangerous picking by medical staff
The infectiologist is especially concerned with improving vaccination protection among medical personnel.
According to study data of the RKI, there are particularly questionable vaccines: Only about 30 percent of nurses and only 60 percent of doctors have influenza protection, according to Wieler.
Many doctors said in the study: “The effectiveness is not that great, because I do not have to get vaccinated,” said the RKI president.
That also the entrusted patients should be protected, will be disregarded. The Community protection achieved through vaccination must be better communicated.
“If a doctor is not vaccinated, then he can not convince patients,” Mertens said.
An unconventional idea had in the discussion of the cabaret artist and doctor. Eckhart von Hirschhausen: Like an Aids-loop doctors should wear a button on the doctor’s coat with the inscription: “I’m vaccinated, talk to me on your vaccinations!”
