Instagram: will you soon be able to delete your account more easily?

Deleting your own Instagram profile is not that easy at the moment. That could change in the future, as a new test shows.

The social media expert Alessandro Paluzzi discovered a new settings experiment that could soon make it easier to delete your own Instagram account. Because the reverse engineer shows in a screenshot on Twitter that the option “Delete your Account” could soon be prominently listed in the profile settings.

Although the Meta App currently has well over a billion users, user growth has slowed. Above all, Gen Z is no longer on Instagram, but on TikTok and Snapchat. The fact that they will soon be able to completely delete their Instagram account more easily should therefore meet with approval, especially from younger users.

Simple instead of complicated in the future? So you can currently delete your Instagram account

If you want to say goodbye to your Instagram profile now, you can do so in six steps:

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile
  2. Go to the burger menu in the upper right corner and then to “Settings”
  3. Tap on “Help” and then on “Help Center”
  4. You will then be redirected to an external page
  5. Go to the burger menu in the upper right corner and then to “Manage your account”
  6. Select “Delete your account”

You will now be asked to delete your Instagram account via the browser. The app asks you whether you just want to temporarily deactivate your profile or remove it permanently. Should you choose the latter, the meta platform will ask you the reason for your decision. After you have entered this, your account including photos and videos will be deleted from Instagram.

Meta strives for transparency: test as a peace offer?

Meta, formerly Facebook, has come under a lot of criticism from authorities and users because the various applications are opaque with regard to the use of user data, the transfer of information or the removal of one’s own profiles. WhatsApp has just changed its own data protection regulations in order to better educate users.

What looks like a peace offer for the critics on WhatsApp could also have been the motivation behind the new test on Instagram. It remains to be seen whether and when the new settings option will be rolled out.
