Iranian wrestling champion Navid Afkari executed despite protests

Afkari was sentenced to death for allegedly stabbing a security officer to death during anti-government protests in 2018. He later retracted the confession for that murder. Afkari’s brothers have been sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison for participating in the same demonstrations.

Confession under duress

There was an international outcry against the death sentence. Among others, US President Donald Trump had called on Tehran to spare the man’s life. The Association of Iranian Academics in the Netherlands also states that Afkari made a confession under duress.

Yesterday afternoon, a demonstration took place at the Iranian embassy in the German capital Berlin.

A demonstration against the execution of Afkari is planned this afternoon on Dam Square in Amsterdam. It starts at 3.30 pm.

Very sad news

The International Olympic Committee says it is ‘shocked’ by the execution of the young Iranian wrestler. “This is very sad news. The IOC is shocked by this announcement. Our thoughts are with Navid Afkari’s family and friends.”
