Scientists of the Irkutsk Institute of Chemistry. Favorsky, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a substance that protects against influenza viruses, including porcine (H1N1), was synthesized. This was reported in the press service of the Irkutsk Scientific Center of the SB RAS.
According to the senior researcher, candidate of pharmaceutical sciences Jana Kostiro, the remedy was obtained in the course of research on the modification of carbohydrates, extracted from plant raw materials and synthesized by microorganisms. This oligosaccharide (polymer carbohydrate), which, as it turned out, has a pronounced antiviral activity.
This property of the drug was studied in cell cultures and laboratory mice at the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the SB RAS in Novosibirsk. As a result, it was possible to establish that the remedy has a preventive effect – in mice, which were buried in the nasal preparation, and then infected with the influenza virus, the disease did not develop. Animals remained healthy.
At present, Irkutsk chemists establish the structure of matter and develop experimental batches for further research. Siberian scientists continue to study the antiviral activity and safety of a new connection. According to experts, if the results are positive, it will be possible to conduct pre-clinical studies.
However, to make the connection turned into a medicine and appeared in pharmacies, there is still a lot of work to be done and it will take a long time.
