IRSN at the science festival!

Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, this year’s Fête de la science has chosen to highlight a subject that is as current as it is fascinating, summed up in a burning question: “the climate, are we talking about it? “. Climate awakening, ecological transition, energy mix will therefore be the leitmotifs of this week of exchange between science and society! Also at the heart of social issues, nuclear energy will have its place thanks to the activities organized by IRSN.

Come and satisfy your insatiable curiosity and your thirst for discovery in our various events throughout France. Olivier Simon, HDR doctor at the Radionuclide Ecotoxicology Laboratory and a researcher who has been very involved for many years in scientific mediation actions in the Cadarache region, will be the IRSN ambassador.

You will also be able to discuss with IRSN scientists through events near you.

IRSN and the Fête de la science: concretely, when is it?

Live Science, the Wizarding Mind show

Discover Science Live on October 7, 8 and 9. Hosted by Fred Courant and accessible to all, journalists and scientists will highlight several themes. Knowledge and debate: the scientific world will be at your fingertips through interaction with the public.

It’s up to you!

The presentation by Claire-Marie Duluc, from the Site Characterization and Natural Hazards Department, and Olivier Simon, IRSN Ambassador, will take place on Saturday October 8 from 3 p.m. to 3:35 p.m.

20 years of science at IRSN

To celebrate our 20 years of science, come and meet us at our sites in Fontenay-aux-Roses and Le Vésinet. This will be the perfect opportunity for you to discover the various missions of the Institute.

FONTENAY-AUX-ROSES: Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

IRSN will present its missions to you through 4 presentations:

  • The criticality accident: when the chain reaction gets carried away
  • IRSN actions in the fight against cancer
  • The secrets of crisis management
  • These drones and robots that measure radioactivity in the environment

Discover the detailed program of the visit of our site of Fontenay-aux-Roses

LE VESINET: Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

IRSN will offer you 4 presentations:

  • Environmental monitoring
  • Beacons and Men: the Remote Sensing Laboratory
  • Environmental analysis and metrology
  • Measurement of exposure to ionizing radiation

Discover the detailed program of the visit of our site of Vesinet.

You will also find the answers to all the questions you have about radioactivity, its uses, its risks, its effects on health and the environment through the educational exhibition. “RADIOACTIVITY – Discover & understand”.

Science Village: IRSN near you!

IRSN researchers will also be present in Aix-en-Provence, Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, Nantes and Gap to lead various workshops :

Find the IRSN 8 and 9 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Village des Sciences d’Aix-en-Provence, at Parc Saint-Mitre

Three stands will be offered to you in this village:

  • “Iodine and cabbage, a question of dosage”: A color science workshop with a presentation and measurements on the pH of red cabbage to tell a story around radioactive iodine. A serious accident at a nuclear facility can result in the release of radioactive iodine into the atmosphere. We study these phenomena at IRSN, to better understand, characterize and anticipate the behavior of this element depending on the conditions.
  • “Experiment on the fire tornado”: The tornado flame experiment consists of reproducing the swirling behavior of a flame by rotating a cup of flaming oil. It illustrates, in a spectacular way, the role of flow dynamics on the behavior of a fire.
  • “The role of fuel cladding during an accident on a nuclear reactor”: This stand explains what the fuel of pressurized water nuclear power plants is made of and presents the research conducted at IRSN.

Find the IRSN 8 and 9 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Village des Sciences de Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, at the Espace René Le Bas

“What about radioactivity in the air and in water? Radionuclides are present in the air and in water, but which ones, where, and at what concentrations? “.

IRSN will present to you the transfer of radioactivity in the air and in the water, but also between the two compartments: from sampling to modeling via measurement. To illustrate our demonstration of the materials allowing to characterize the state of the atmosphere as the concentration in particles or the meteorology will be presented. To illustrate the marine domain, specific oceanographic material will be exhibited.

Find the IRSN 8 and 9 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Village des Sciences de Nantes, at the Natural History Museum

“With OpenRadiation, measure the radioactivity in the environment yourself! »

Partners of the OpenRadiation project will introduce you to the project. The objective is to be absolutely transparent about the sampling of the level of radioactivity in the environment in the face of the growing doubts of public opinion in the face of official sources. How ? During your visit, you will be able to take samples yourself using the sensors provided.

Find IRSN on October 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Village des Sciences de Gap, at the Quattro

Find out about IRSN’s missions in terms of nuclear safety and the protection of health and the environment from radioactivity.

Science in the classroom

From October 7 to 17, research comes to meet young audiences with the “Sciences dans les classes” operation! IRSN scientists will visit primary schools, colleges and high schools in the PACA region to arouse the curiosity of students, while allowing researchers to confront an outside and, very often, sharp perspective!

We hope lots of you come !
