First of all, the good news: The iPhone 8 is still a good smartphone almost three years after its launch at the end of 2017. It still receives current updates, such as iOS 13.5.1 only recently. The performance is on par with many current mid-range smartphones and in terms of workmanship it is still at the top.
Well aged …
The manufacturer’s A11 Bionic chip works inside the iPhone 8, plus there is 2 GB of RAM. That doesn’t sound like a lot considering the up to 16 GB of RAM that is in a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. But iOS is still doing surprisingly well with little memory and users shouldn’t have any problems with the speed of work. The smartphone also has a 4.7-inch retina display with 1,334 × 750 pixels resolution. The resolution is okay for the relatively small display, so the pixel density per inch is 326 PPI. Even the current Huawei Mate 30 is not significantly higher at 389 PPI. The iPhone 8 is IP67 waterproof and is the first iPhone to have the wireless charging function together with the iPhone X. It has a 12 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and can even record videos in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS). Some users also prefer the home button, which can be used to unlock the smartphone and which can no longer be found in the newer iPhones.
Apple has always delivered updates. Even expensive Android smartphones usually only get two major version updates, the iPhone 8 has already received two and will get the update to iOS 14 later this year. IPhones receive an average of 4-5 years of iOS updates and the iPhone 8 is not even included 3 years. Finally, the iPhone 6 fell out of the list of devices with current software, it got updates for 4 years and 11 months. The iPhone 6s, on the other hand, has got iOS 13 and will also see iOS 14. With the iPhone 8, iOS 16 could therefore be the end, that would be more than 2 years of software updates.
… but not up to date anymore
But the iPhone has developed significantly in the three and a half years. Triple camera, almost borderless OLED screen and Face ID – none of this can be found here. Especially with the battery you can see the age of the eighth. The small models without “Plus” always had an undersized battery. The iPhone 8 has a capacity of just 1820 mAh – even less than the iPhone 7. The iPhone 11 Pro, which is not much larger than the iPhone 8, has a more than 50 percent larger battery. After all, the iPhone 8 supports fast charging with 15 watts, but is a bit slower than the current iPhones with 18 watts.
Also interesting: iPhone 9 is coming soon – and will probably be really cheap
There is a better alternative
For a long time, the iPhone 8 was a good entry-level device into the Apple world, but this role was promptly removed from the new iPhone SE. The iPhone SE 2020 is largely based on the iPhone 8 – such as the case, battery and screen – but it comes with the current Apple A13 Bionic, more RAM and a better camera. Above all, the powerful A13 Bionic ensures considerably better pictures and videos and an unmatched working speed thanks to Computational Photography. The new price of the iPhone SE with 64 GB of storage is around 450 euros, just 80 euros higher than the Aldi offer. Yes, that’s right: for just 80 euros more, there is a brand new, significantly more powerful iPhone SE.
Aldi doesn’t offer the best price
Not even nearly. Because the offer for 369 euros applies to a refurbished iPhone 8 with 64 GB of storage. According to the supply side, the overhaul is very thorough – all components are removed, thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and reinstalled (defective parts are exchanged with original spare parts). However, it is not a new iPhone. This means that the device may show minor signs of wear and the battery may no longer have full capacity. After all, the iPhone receives a two-year warranty from Aldi partner Medion, which goes beyond the twelve-month statutory warranty.
A refurbished iPhone 8, for example, is available from Amazon for just under 300 euros for the 64 GB version – almost 70 euros cheaper than Aldi. Even the 256 GB version costs around 370 euros, slightly more than Aldi’s offer. The iPhones are sold through Amazon’s “Renewed” program. Renewed devices are visually inspected and their functionality tested. According to Amazon, only flawless devices that look and function like new should be sold. If this is not the case, as some users report in the reviews, there is an exchange or the money back from Amazon. According to Amazon, the battery should have at least 80 percent of the original capacity. The devices come with a one-year Amazon Renewed guarantee.
“369 euros for an iPhone 8 are not bad per se. But for the price, Aldi must also be able to guarantee a perfect condition, but does not provide any information on the condition of the battery, for example. For just a little more money, buyers can already get the much better and newer iPhone SE 2020, which I get a clear purchase recommendation from. Amazon’s Renewed offer is also available for less, but it may take several attempts to get a flawless iPhone. ”- Adrian Mühlroth, editor
