Düsseldorf Next weekend (April 8th to 10th), the ADAC predicts that the motorways will be “lively at times”. This is how eight federal states start the Easter holidays. This attracts many travelers, especially in the direction of the Alps, southern countries or the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas.
The busiest time should therefore be on Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Although you will hardly escape the traffic jam, the club does not expect a “chaos traffic jam”.
The ADAC cites the corona crisis, high fuel prices and economic concerns triggered by the war in Ukraine as reasons for the somewhat curbed desire to travel.
There are always disruptions in the area of construction sites, of which the car club currently counts 940 (892 in the previous week). And especially at higher altitudes, wintry weather is to be expected.

In an initial forecast for the long Easter weekend (April 14 to 18), the ADAC expects more travel and a more tense traffic jam situation than in the past pandemic years.
Cross-regional travel is now possible without any problems. But here, too, the club points to a curbed desire to travel for the reasons mentioned. Traffic is therefore unlikely to reach the level of the pre-pandemic period.
The car club names the higher-lying winter sports centers in the Alps as well as the North and Baltic Seas as the main travel destinations for Easter. But even day trips, especially when the weather is nice, and visits to relatives are likely to fill the highways at times.
Most traffic jams on Maundy Thursday
Most of the traffic jams should already be on Maundy Thursday (April 14). Before the pandemic, the day was one of the five busiest days of 2019. So many commuters are out and about. More traffic can also be expected on Easter Monday (April 18), when the long weekend ends. The least likely to be going on on Easter Sunday.
The ADAC expects delays and traffic jams, especially around the metropolitan areas of Frankfurt/Main, Munich, Cologne and Stuttgart, on the routes to the German coasts and on the following routes:

Depending on the section and time, the ADAC also expects lively Easter travel for Switzerland and Austria. The western (A 1), the Tauern (A 10), the Inntal (A 12) and the Brenner autobahn (A 13) as well as the Fernpass route (B 179) and the Tyrolean, Salzburg and Vorarlberg routes are at risk of congestion in Austria federal roads.
In Switzerland there is a lot of traffic: the Gotthard route (A 2), the route St. Gallen – Zurich – Bern (A 1) and the access roads to the winter sports areas of Graubünden, the Bernese Oberland, Valais and Central Switzerland. The Gotthard tunnel (A 2) is due for maintenance work in the spring. Easter traffic is not affected.
Expect entry controls
Random checks are to be expected for border traffic. How long you currently have to wait when returning from Austria to Germany can be seen online at the Austrian infrastructure company Asfinag.
Travelers should inform themselves about the applicable corona rules. Information on the current requirements inside and outside of Germany is available from ACE and ADAC as well as from the Federal Foreign Office. Drivers should also find out about the winter tire regulations in the destination country before setting off.
