Italian woman (25) liberated 18 months after kidnapping in Kenya Abroad

Silvia Romano was 23 years old and volunteered at the orphanage in the village of Chakama in southeastern Kenya when she was taken by armed men in November 2018. Kenyan police sources state that the kidnapping bore the characteristics of terror organization al-Shabaab, a militant group that has been campaigning against the government in Somalia for more than a decade.

“Silvia Romano has been liberated!” Said Conte in a tweet. “I want to thank the women and men of the intelligence services involved. Silvia, we look forward to seeing you in Italy! ”He added.

Bloody attack on orphanage

Chakama is located about 60 kilometers inland from the coastal town of Malindi, which is popular with Italian tourists and expats. During the kidnapping on November 20, 2018, the armed attackers shot and injured five people in the orphanage, including three children.

No details have been released about Romano’s release, or about the identities or motives of her captors. According to Italian media, these are radical Islamic fighters, allied with al-Shabaab, who are responsible for the kidnapping.
